PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – A man is accused of attacking a woman in her home before stealing her money Thursday night, deputies said.

When the woman answered her door, the man tried to sexually assault her, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. He demanded money and stayed inside her home on Carmen Street for about 20 minutes before leaving, deputies said.

Neighbors like Todd Hoover were unnerved about what happened.

“To hear of something so violent right across the street — it scares the living the daylights out of me,” Hoover said.

Investigators questioned several neighbors to see if they had any information on the attacker.

“We’re looking for any possible witnesses,” Lt. Todd Davis said. “A lot of times, people have video cameras on their houses, so we’re looking for anything that may help us in regards to finding the person who did this.”

Neighbors said the woman is too afraid to return home.

The man has not been caught.
