Gas leaks on the rise in Charlotte County

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — Potentially dangerous gas leaks have become a frequent occurrence in Charlotte County.

The latest came Tuesday morning, when the administrative offices at the Charlotte County Jail were evacuated. A part of Veterans Boulevard was shut down Monday after construction crews hit a gas line near Wal-Mart.

“It seems like it’s a series of coincidental gas leaks and that’s unfortunate, but we hope that they don’t happen as much as they have been in the last several months,” said Charlotte County spokesman Brian Gleason.

The leaks, most of which have been construction-related, have become progressively more commonplace. There have been 10 natural gas leaks in Charlotte County this year, nine of which happened in the last six months, according to the Charlotte County Fire Department. A further uptick has taken place since mid-October.

An Oct. 14 leak at U.S. 41 and Port Charlotte Boulevard was followed quickly by two more on Oct. 19 and Oct. 20 on Kings Highway and Midway Boulevard. Construction workers damaged a gas line on Oct. 19 and the repairs didn’t hold up, causing it to leak again the next day.

Charlotte County fired the contractor responsible for hitting two gas lines in two days.
