Christmas decorations pose fiery risk

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Decorating during the holiday season is a tradition for many. However, many of these decorations are a potential fire hazard.

Ed Steffans, fire prevention chief of the Iona McGregor Fire Department, recommends buying lights with a UL-rated wire and fresh Christmas trees, as they are less likely to catch fire.

“We hope people will take these tips and help us fight fires before they begin,” he said. “Some of the most tragic fires I have experienced have been during the Christmas holiday.”

Steffans also says to double check old decorations before putting them up and to call 911 if an emergency situation were to occur.
