Suspect sought in connection to fatal Bonita Springs crash

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. — An unknown driver who struck and killed a 46-year-old bicyclist Thursday night is still at large.

The crash occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Old U.S. 41 and Mediterra Drive, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Old U.S. 41 was completely shut down for several hours.

Neighbors like Maria Garcia have voiced concerns about the area’s lack of streetlights, sidewalks and bike lanes.

“They’re usually dressed in dark clothing and, as a driver, it’s really hard to see them,” she said. “But I would say more lights down Old 41 would be a good idea.”

Michael Levaul also believes this tragedy shows how much work needs to be done in the area.

“I’m so sad to hear that someone lost their lives last night,” he said. “On hindsight, — there is no bike track, so maybe the city should invest in a bike track.”

Investigators haven’t released the victim’s name pending notification of his family.
