Father takes son back to scene of Bonita hit-and-run

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. A father faced a difficult decision after his son left the scene of a deadly accident on March 31.

The 17-year-old driver took off after he crashed into a 16-year-old girl riding a motorcycle on Bonita Beach Boulevard. The driver then drove to a restaurant where his father worked.

The father walked the driver back to the scene and told deputies what happened.

Florida law makes hit-and-run crashes a first-degree felony, but personal injury and wrongful death attorney James O’Leary believes that returning to the scene could help the driver’s case.

“Judges typically take it into consideration,” O’Leary said.

Besides the possibility of facing criminal charges, the driver could also face a civil suit from the victim’s family.

“This could be the worst thing that would ever happen in the person’s life, the worst decision they ever made,” O’Leary said. “And hopefully from a society standpoint, they’re going to have a productive (life) and make good decisions in the future.”

WINK News isn’t naming the driver or the victim because both are minors.
