On Friday, 10 kids and three adults were sent to the hospital because of an irritant released in the school cafeteria during a dance for students and parents/guardians. Parents still want to know who sprayed something in the air at the dance and what the school district is going to do about it.

Students returned to class at G. Weaver Hipps Elementary School in in Lehigh Acres Monday following the chaotic event.

It was a large attendance at the elementary school’s Friend Dance.

It’s still a mystery what the substance was. Lehigh Acres Fire’s hazmat unit tested the air and has not determined what it is that sent people to the hospital.

Lee County Sheriff’s Office and Lee County school district are reviewing security footage.

There are no further updates, as it is still an active investigation.

The district wouldn’t say what security it had in place on Friday but said depending on the grade and event, there should be staff supervision, extra law enforcement and bag searches. Either way, chemical spray is not allowed at school.

If investigators find it is a student who sprayed the irritant intentionally, the school district said it could result in a suspension.
