As of Monday, more Floridians will have access to the COVID-19 vaccine now that those 60 and older qualify.

Governor Ron DeSantis said every time they expand eligibility by five years, about 2 million more people become eligible for shots.

“We’re starting to see around the state softening of the demand among 65 and up because millions have gotten the shot,” DeSantis said.

The governor said it’s important to continue to focus on the older generations who are more likely to see long-term effects from the virus.

“I think it’s a good time to make that addition on Monday and I think a lot of people will be really happy for that.”

Desantis said in Lee County over half of seniors have been vaccinated.

The expansion comes after DeSantis opened up vaccinations to school staff who are 50 and older.
