A motorcyclist was killed in a crash Saturday in Lehigh Acres.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash happened on 8th Street SW, just west of Sunshine Boulevard at 12:16 p.m.

The 55-year-old driver of a Jeep was backing out of a driveway on 8th Street SW onto Sunshine when he backed into the path of the 31-year-old motorcyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver received a citation with a mandatory court appearance for improper backing.

Neighbor Tedreamia Bataille said she wants people to be careful and safe when driving through the neighborhood.

“Please be careful. Kids, be careful. Stay out of the road. Every time I see kids waiting at the bus stop, be careful,” she said.

She and other neighbors said 8th Street SW is full of speedy drivers. Bataille said she worries about her family and friends heading out on that road.

“People drive fast. People be speeding early in the morning,” she said. “People go around people. Incoming cars coming, they go around people. They don’t have no patience for people to turn onto their street and get to their house.”

The Florida Highway Patrol said speeding was not a factor in this crash. However, Bataille still wants drivers on 8th Street SW to slow down.

“Take your time. Think to yourself. There are people’s kids on the road, people’s families on the road,” Bataille said. “Don’t think you speeding is going to get you where you need to go because you never know in that minute somebody coming out and boom! That’s your life.”
