A shooting left one person dead late Saturday at a Fort Myers apartment complex, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and two people have been arrested.
Israel Mejia and Anna Rose Cisneros were arrested by LCSO deputies. Mejia, 24, faces a second-degree murder charge. Cisneros, 34, faces a charge of accessory to second-degree murder.
Residents at The Fountain at Forestwood on Brantley Road said they heard arguing and then three gunshots at about 10:45 p.m.
“My boyfriend was here at the time, he heard the gunshots and next thing you know, he saw the body on the ground,” said Amanda Huegele, who lives in the apartment complex.
Cars were backed up in the area and some people weren’t able to get home.
Jerry Joseph was the one who called 911. “Once I saw the person hit the ground, I almost immediately ran and grabbed my phone to call 911.”
His hands and voice were shaking when he spoke to dispatch because there was a body outside.
“It was probably the wildest thing I’ve ever seen, so at the same time, it seemed to happen in slow motion,” he said.
When detectives from LCSO arrived, they found a man who had been shot dead in the parking lot.
One woman who lives a few doors down from where the shooting happened said K-9s and a helicopter swarmed the area for hours, and it wasn’t until about 7 a.m. Sunday that the victim and evidence markers were removed from the scene.
This shooting comes just days after another report of shots fired at the complex. At least one person was injured in that shooting and a person of interest was detained, deputies said. It is not known if the two incidents are connected.
Deputies will continue to interview the people involved.
“The police assured me that those people don’t live here. They don’t suspect any reason for them to come back to the neighborhood,” Joseph said.
Both suspects were in court Monday morning. Mejia was ordered held on $1 million bail, while Cisneros was given $150,000 bail. Both will be arraigned July 26.
