A father is devastated and heartbroken after losing his daughter in a shooting last week. He says the man who shot and killed his daughter had a violent history with her.

Anne Fleury’s father lost his only child. And Anne’s mother, Jeanne Charles Andre, also died that day. Andre was killed right in front of her grandchildren when she was shot.

Remy Fleury, Anne’s father, says his family knew Ethan Cartwright was a bad person. Sheriff’s deputies in Broward County arrested Cartwright in 2016 for domestic violence battery. Remy says the incident involved his daughter, but she still went back.

Lee County detectives say Cartwright shot and killed Anne and her mother last week in front of the couple’s two children. Remy says his 6-year-old grandson remembers every detail of the killing, and his 2-year-old daughter still cries for her grandma.

“He explained how this thing happened. How Ethan killed his grandmother,” said Fleury. “She keeps asking for grandma. ‘Where is Grandma?’ ‘Where is Mama?’ Since the incident, she doesn’t eat anything, she doesn’t drink anything.”

His focus now is on taking care of his grandchildren and making sure the person who killed his children gets what he deserves.

The crime scene tape has come down, and the detectives have left the scene. But what happened at that home in San Carlos Park will be burned into everyone’s minds. Patricio Gonzalez is a neighbor. “It’s not something you can just get over from one day to another,” Gonzalez said.

Remy Fleury’s daughter and ex-wife are now dead. His grandchildren witnessed the murder. “I feel devastated. That’s the only daughter I have. I have no other kids,” Remy said.

Fleury returned to that San Carlos Park home, to that crime scene, to get some clothing and toys for the children he is now taking care of. “They are my kids now. Not grandkids but my kids,” said Fleury.

Remy feared this day might come. In 2016, Broward County deputies arrested Cartwright on domestic violence charges. The affidavit doesn’t name the victim. But, Fleury says, Anne was holding onto her son and attempting to “pack and leave the home” when Cartwright pushed and then punched her.

“What I’m waiting for is justice for the family. And the justice I’m waiting for is that guy it’s the death penalty for him,” Fleury said.

WINK News spoke to a trauma expert that said it could take a lifetime of therapy for those children to heal. But that healing is possible. Remy Fleury says healing is what he’s been praying for.
