A fire ripped through a house on Ballard Road in Fort Myers Friday morning, leaving two people and several animals without shelter.

The Fort Myers Police Department and the Fort Myers Fire Department are at the scene of a house fire on Ballard Road and urge drivers to avoid the area and seek an alternate route.

FMFD says it received a call around 7:30 a.m., with the caller reporting the entire house on fire, possibly with someone trapped inside. Firefighters indeed found the home fully engulfed by flames a few minutes later, dousing the flames from the porch before going inside to search for victims. No victim was inside.

FMFD tells WINK News that two people lived at the house. One was able to get out when the fire occurred, while her housemate was at work. Animals were inside and also were able to get out in time.

“I just gotta move on from there and keep going,” said L.D. Turner, the man who was away at work when the house caught on fire. Turner lived in the house for nine years.

FMPD says Ballard Road will be shut down for a period of time from Markland Avenue to Veronica Shoemaker. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
