Cape Coral Hospital is celebrating a record for its maternity ward.

In the month of August, 189 babies were delivered, a record for the 34-year-old ward.

Hospital staff worked extra shifts to handle the birth spirit.

The previous record was 137 babies birthed in a month.

“We are very proud and very excited every day that the number climbed up a little bit higher. We knew we were going to meet a milestone for the unit,” said Nancy Travis, director of Women & Neonatal Services at Lee Health’s Cape Coral Hospital.

Heather Bennett, a new mom, said she went to Cape Coral Hospital at 32 weeks after having issues with another hospital.

“They welcomed me with open arms,” Bennett said.

It’s that friendliness that convinced Bennett she found the right place to have her baby.

Now, she is forever thankful for her nurse Donna.

“She really, emotionally, helped me with the delivery because he actually was stuck in my birth canal for an hour and a half. And she was just in my ear encouraging me and saying, Heather, you can do this,” Bennett said.

At that moment, she didn’t know she would be part of hospital history, but she said she is honored to be one of the lucky moms.

“I definitely know where I’m coming for baby number two and if there’s a baby number three,” Bennett said.

The staff at the maternity unit say they expect a busy September, too.
