Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell said one of his deputies was injured early Thursday morning as he patrolled the area of Babcock Ranch.

Prummell said the deputy found a juvenile prowling near a restaurant and when he questioned the child, the two got into an altercation.

The sheriff’s office did not release the age of the juvenile. They said he had a hammer in his hand.

The deputy was stabbed six times by the juvenile with a pocket knife. He was stabbed about three times in his head, and one other time he received a defensive wound to his arm. He also had one wound to his ear and another behind his ear.

Units were able to get on scene to help the injured deputy, who was airlifted to a hospital, Prummell said.

“I was able to speak with him this morning, thankfully none of the wounds were life-threatening,” Prummell said. “Please keep him in your prayers and God bless.”

The juvenile was apprehended and admitted to deputies that he was attempting to break into the Lakehouse Kitchen and Bar.
