Fort Myers man guilty in DUI manslaughter of two

A 46-year-old Fort Myers man has been found guilty as charged of two counts of DUI manslaughter following a three-day trial in Collier County.

Lukasz Jacek Ryszka was also found guilty of DUI serious bodily injury. DUI damage to a person/property and reckless driving causing serious bodily injury.

According to the State Attorney’s Office, the crimes happened on Oct. 24, 2020, just before midnight as the defendant drove a Toyota pickup truck, at high speed, into oncoming traffic, going southbound in the northbound lane of County Road 881 in Collier County.

Ryszka was also accused of running red lights and driving recklessly for almost 10 miles, and a portion of it was caught on video.

The truck eventually collided with a minivan just south of County Road 886. The van’s driver was pronounced dead on the scene. Three passengers were in the van, and one of them died at the hospital, the State Attorney’s Office said. One victim suffered serious bodily injuries, and the fourth survived.

Ryszka’s blood alcohol level was .222 after the crash, more than double the legal limit. The State Attorney’s Office said also said he smelled of alcohol.

His sentencing is scheduled for May 12.
