2024 Tax-free shopping helps you prepare for Hurricane Season and summer fun

As southwest Florida gears up for Hurricane Season and the excitement of summer vacation, there are timely opportunities to save big.

WINK News viewer Bea Sanford emailed us and asked, “Can you let your viewers know what specifically is covered in the Florida Tax-Free Holiday? For example, is pet food included?”

The first 2024 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday coincides with the start of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season. It occurs from Saturday, June 1, until Friday, June 14, 2024, and sales tax is waived on eligible items related to disaster preparedness.

What’s Covered

$20 or less:

  • Reusable ice packs

$40 or less:

  • Portable light sources such as candles, flashlights, and lanterns

$50 or less:

  • Gas or diesel fuel containers
  • Batteries, excluding automobile and boat batteries
  • Portable radios (two-way and weather band)

$60 or less:

  • Coolers and ice chests
  • Portable power banks
Hurricane supplies (WINK News)

$70 or less:

  • Carbon monoxide detectors
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Smoke detectors or smoke alarms

$3,000 or less:

  • Portable generators

Pet Evacuation Supplies

$10 or less:

  • Wet cat or dog food (per can or pouch or the equivalent if sold in a box or case)

$15 or less:

  • Cat litter pans
  • Collapsible or travel-size food or water bowls
  • Hamster or rabbit substrate
  • Manual can openers
  • Pet waste disposal bags

$20 or less:

  • Collars
  • Muzzles
  • Leashes
  • Pet pads

$25 or less:

  • Cat litter weighing 25lbs. or less

$40 or less:

  • Pet beds

$100 or less:

  • Bags of dry cat or dog food weighing 50 lbs. or less
  • Pet carriers
  • Portable kennels
  • Over-the-counter pet medications

Freedom Month Sales Tax Holiday

And the savings don’t end there.

The Freedom Month Sales Tax Holiday happens in July. Items like fishing supplies, outdoor recreation equipment, and admissions to state parks and museums are all sales tax-free. Sunscreen is also included. Get a full list of items here.
