A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a Collier County woman in September of 2018.

Twenty-six-year-old Santiago Burbano stabbed his then-girlfriend more than 80 times with a tactical knife on Sept. 13, 2018, according to a release by the state attorney’s office, Monday.

Burbano made an open plea to the court. Every defendant can choose to give up their right to a jury trial and plea straight to the court for sentencing by the Judge. This is not a plea agreement.

In 2018, the victim visited Burbano at his East Naples apartment and while there, he attacked her with a knife and killed her in his bedroom.

Burbano then texted a couple of acquaintances and told them he had killed someone.

He then left the bedroom and told his mother what happened, and she called 911.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office responded and arrested Burbano.

The release from the state attorney did not say when he will begin to serve his prison sentence.
