As part of an initiative to increase food donations, Charlotte County is renewing its “Food for Fines” program.

The program turns local libraries into donation sites, encouraging people to donate food and removing overdue book rental fees.

According to Charlotte County officials, in 2023, library patrons donated 17,616 food items, waiving around $9,700.44 in fines.

Donors can contribute by bringing in canned goods, non-perishable food items, or unopened toiletries instead of cash donations.

Additional items that may be donated are included below:

  • Canned goods such as soup, vegetables, fruits, beans, pasta sauce, tuna, and canned meats
  • Dry pasta, rice, and macaroni and cheese
  • Oatmeal and dry cereal
  • Baking mixes and pancake mixes
  • Crackers and cookies
  • Instant potatoes
  • Applesauce
  • Peanut butter and jelly
  • Single serving snacks
  • Juice boxes and bottled water

  • Sunscreen
  • Diapers
  • Brushes and combs
  • Wet and dry food for dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens
