Though they originally expected to have a newly renovated planetarium for the public to enjoy on Sunday, the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium saw a sudden change of plans.

Their planetarium will remain closed pending renovations of new carpeting and chairs.

Earlier it was reported there was a final inspection due. However, that report was incorrect.

The apparent delay is irrelevant to a mercury leak that happened over the summer stated Eric Raddatz, Executive Director of the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium.

Three individuals were treated for mercury exposure at Lee Memorial after a lightbulb replacement for the planetarium projector went awry in July.

The center has not provided an update regarding when the reopening date will occur or if the Sept. 27 Grand Opening event will be affected.
