According to the Weather Authority, the potential for a tropical system headed towards Florida next week is increasing. The next name is Milton.

More models and ensembles are jumping on board for a potential tropical storm in the Gulf next week.

Some models show a hurricane if favorable ingredients can come together.

It will likely be classified as an Invest (an area we are investigating) soon. As a result, more track and intensity models will be issued. A forecast cone could be issued if the odds for development increase and a closed low forms Sunday into Monday.

WINK News Chief Meteorologist Matt Devitt said that the best way to think about it is that Florida will see a one-two punch.

The first one will bring rain Sunday into Monday with an area of low pressure along a stalled out front. Then, over already saturated ground, the second and main punch, a potential tropical system, approaches on Tuesday, with primary impacts on Wednesday. It will start to roll out by Thursday.

The tropical system hasn’t formed yet, and it’s still too early to discuss the specific impacts of any possible surge or wind. The Weather Authority has a rainfall forecast in Southwest Florida of 4 to 7 inches on average for Saturday through Thursday, with Isolated 8-plus inches in spots.

That forecast, which is subject to change, is highly dependent on track.
