A tornado was caught on camera touching down in southern Florida on Wednesday while major Hurricane Milton was off the west coast of Florida.

The tornado was just north of Alligator Alley in Collier County.

Chylynne Johnson took the video below while heading to Miami to evacuate from Hurricane Milton.

The tornado was on the ground, a couple of miles northwest of the Miccosukee Service Plaza.

Early Wednesday afternoon, potentially tornadic cells continued pushing north, into Clewiston.

According to the National Weather Service, it is possible for a hurricane to produce tornadoes.

“These tornadoes most often occur in thunderstorms embedded in rain bands well away from the center of the hurricane; however, they can also occur near the eyewall. The majority of tornadoes associated with tropical systems occur in the right front quadrant of the storm. This area typically has the best wind shear and instability. Most of the tropical tornadoes that affect central South Carolina and eastern Georgia are from tropical systems that make landfall in the Gulf of Mexico and continue on a path toward the north/northeast. Usually, tornadoes produced by tropical cyclones are relatively weak and short-lived, but they still pose a significant threat,” says the National Weather Service website.
