According to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office one of their corporals was shot and killed while making a traffic stop over the weekend.

Shortly after 3 p.m. on Sunday, authorities said, Corporal Elio Diaz was shot and killed after stopping a driver who pulled over at a Chevron gas station across from the Sunseeker in Charlotte Harbor.

According to CCSO, Andrew Mostyn then pulled out a rifle and opened fire on Diaz before fleeing the scene.

Deputies located Mostyn near Popeyes on Kings Highway. Mostyn reached for a rifle, and deputies fatally shot him.

In an X post on Sunday evening, Senator Rick Scott said that he was “devastated to hear of the passing of a Charlotte County deputy tonight.”

Scott lives in Southwest Florida.

A large law enforcement presence responded to the shooting in Charlotte County.

Sheriff Prummell addressed the media on Sunday evening regarding the shootings but didn’t answer any questions.
