Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers recently braved icy waters to rescue around 30 sea turtles.

Two FWC officers ventured into Gulf County waters, undeterred by the near-freezing temperatures recently plaguing Florida from a potent cold front.

On Wednesday, snow fell in the northern region of Florida, dropping between 6 and 8 inches in some areas. However, sub-optimal conditions had not deterred the rescue of the distressed marine animals.

The cold-stunned animals will be relocated away from the hazardous environment to warmer waters.

Before they are relocated, the FWC will treat the animals for any potential injuries.

Three FWC divisions work to help maintain and protect this marine species.

The Division of Habitat and Species Conservation – Imperiled Species Management is responsible for management efforts of sea turtle recovery.

The Fish and Wildlife Research Institute conducts and coordinates research for information on abundance, distribution and mortality.

Division of Law Enforcement protects Florida’s natural resources, including the five marine animal species.

Conservation efforts continue for this protected species, as the FWC offers several methods for Floridans to contribute.
