TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – The Pinellas County man convicted of trying to buy weapons in 2011 for a planned terror attack in Tampa has been sentenced to 40 years in federal prison.

Sami Osmakac was sentenced in federal court Wednesday.

In May, jurors found Osmakac guilty of the federal charges of attempted possession of a weapon of mass destruction and possession of an unregistered machine gun.

Osmakac was arrested in 2012 after authorities said he tried to buy weapons, including a car bomb and an AK-47, from an undercover agent he thought was an arms dealer.

During the three-week trial, jurors heard from psychiatrists who said Osmakac is mentally ill. Prosecutors also played videos recorded by a confidential informant.
