LEE COUNTY, Fla.- Lee County deputies are investigating two connected crime scenes just miles apart early Monday morning.

Authorities say 24-year-old Dakota Fields died after he was shot and then involved in a car crash.

A call came in around 2:30 a.m. Monday about possible shots fired at the Waffle House restaurant near I-75 and Palm Beach Boulevard.

Deputies say a verbal argument broke out between patrons inside the restaurant that quickly escalated into a physical altercation.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office tells WINK News, Fields was shot at the Waffle House and then left the restaurant with friends in an SUV.

The SUV was heading westbound on First Street when it ran a red light and slammed into a car at the foot of the Edison Bridge. When emergency responders arrived, Fields had died.

The three other people in the SUV were detained by the sheriff’s office for questioning.

“I walked over to it and I could hear two people say ‘he’s been shot, shot twice, we need 911 right now,'” said Richard House.

House says he helped give CPR to the victim, who had a gunshot wound under his heart.

“The first thing that went through my mind is ‘please God don’t let this man die right here,'” said House. “Sad to hear that he didn’t make it.”

Police have not confirmed whether or not the shooter is in custody.
