SEOUL, South Korea (AP) – North Korea says it’s willing to impose a temporary moratorium on a nuclear test if the U.S. scraps military drills with South Korea this year.

The North’s official Korean Central News Agency says Pyongyang conveyed the proposal to the U.S. on Friday through an unspecified channel.

KCNA’s report Saturday said it was “time for the U.S. to make a bold decision for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula” and in the region.

Pyongyang has called U.S.-South Korean drills a rehearsal for an invasion, though the allies have repeatedly said they have no intentions of attacking the North.

The North conducted nuclear tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013.

A fourth test would mark another defiant response to U.S.-led international pressure on Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear program.
