Driver arrested for leaving the scene of a bicycle crash

FORT MYERS, Fla.- A Southwest Florida bicyclist says it’s a miracle he’s alive.

He tells WINK News, a driver left him laying in the road completely helpless then took off.

So what did he do? Banged up and bruised, he says he got up and tracked that driver down.

The crash happened on McGregor Boulevard and Kimberly Lane in Fort Myers across from the Gulf Harbour Yacht and Country Club.

“Had I been knocked unconscious or hurt really badly,” said James Hall.

Hall says he was riding his bike home from work along McGregor Boulevard. Deputies say that’s when Georgette Buntrock slammed his SUV into him.

“Cut right in front of me and I hit my breaks, slid, slammed into the side of the car, my bike went one way and I rolled out in to the intersection,” said Hall.

Hall says Buntrock didn’t even stop and took off. Hall got back on his bike chased her down all the way to her house down the road.

“I yelled, ‘you just ran me over,'” said Hall. “She didn’t seem too concerned.”

Hall later called deputies to file a report and Buntrock was given a ticket and sent to jail.

WINK News stopped by her house and her husband came to the door and said “believe me, it’s not like it sounds.”

Buntrock told deputies she saw the bike and believes Hall gave her a head nod to allow her to turn. She also says she planned to walk down the street to check on him.

“Leaving the scene where a person is laying on the ground, you have to render help,” said Hall.

Buntrock has since been released from the Lee County Jail and faces a charge of leaving the scene with a crash.
