DAVENPORT, Fla. (AP) – Investigators say a 30-year-old driver for a mattress company died after stopping his truck and stepping into the road to grab a cell phone that he’d spotted on U.S. 27.

Co-workers told Polk County Sheriff’s deputies that when Greylin Jimenez darted into the road Tuesday night, he was hit by four passing vehicles. He died at the scene.

Deputies say the road was dark and there was just one street light in the area. The section of U.S. 27 has six lanes of traffic with a speed limit of 60 mph.

The drivers of all four vehicles stopped and assisted in the investigation. Deputies say charges are not expected against any of them but an investigation continues.

The road was shut down for about four hours as the scene was cleared.
