Autopsy confirms Cape man killed by powerful new drug

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – WINK News has confirmed a dangerous new synthetic drug is in fact responsible for the death of a young Cape Coral man.

Richard Gley, 20, was found dead in the front yard of a home on Trafalgar Parkway last November.

According to his autopsy report released Monday, Gley died from drug intoxication. The report states the drug was 25B-NBOMe, the same drug Gley’s family suspected killed him.

Gley’s mother told WINK News back in November that her son was at a party in Cape Coral the night he died.

“They were offered Jell-O shots. After he drank it he started to vomit and became like the hulk,” said Shannon Gley, who also said her son did not know the drug was in the shot.

NBOMe is a powerful synthetic psychedelic that can cause strong hallucinations, increased heart rate, nausea, paranoia, seizures, and death.

“We’ve got all kinds of drugs that chemists are making and we don’t always know what’s in them,” said Deb Comella, executive director of the Lee County Coalition for a Drug-Free Southwest Florida.

Comella says it’s vital that parents educate their kids on the dangers of synthetic drugs like NBOMe.

“We don’t know what they are, we don’t know how they’re going to affect you, and they’re dangerous for teens, they’re dangerous for anybody of any age,” she said.

Drug-Free Southwest Florida is soon launching its annual campaign called “Safe Homes. Smart Parties,” aimed at educating parents about how to talk to their kids about how to be safe while gathering with their friends.
