CAPE CORAL, Fla.- A teen is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after he was hit by a van while riding his skateboard late Tuesday night.

Police say 18-year-old Matthew Burden was riding his skateboard on Embers Parkway when a van hit him from behind.

According to authorities, Burden was toward the middle of the outside lane and was wearing dark clothing.

WINK News spoke to a neighbor who says the road is very dangerous, even her own teenage son was hit by a car while walking to the bus stop.

She says she’s sad but not surprised to hear about Tuesday night’s crash.

“It upsets me, because I have called several times and complained about the speed of people going up and down this road, and there’s no room for pedestrians. The 45 limit either needs to be dropped or it needs sidewalks put in,” said Shelly Cappa.

Police say if you are riding a skateboard remember to wear protective gear like pads and a helmet, wear bright clothing and try to stay in well-lit areas.

There are no charges filed at this time. Burden remains in critical condition at the hospital.
