Crash causes bus stop awning to collapse with woman underneath

NORTH NAPLES, Fla.- Witnesses say a utility truck slammed into a bus stop awning causing one elderly woman underneath to make a mad dash for her life.

There is only a bench left at the bus stop near the Sam’s Club near the intersection of Immokalee Road and Airport Pulling Road.

It’s been one day since Jamie Button was near that bus stop and she can’t get what happened off her mind. She hopes to find the woman who survived to check on her after the scare.

“Now, today, I’m just wondering if she is okay,” said Button. “Because she was so sweet.”

Button was pumping gas Wednesday when she heard something that sounded like a horrific car crash. She looked up.

“When I saw it, I was like ‘woah’ and other people were like ‘oh my gosh, that lady just almost got crushed.'”

Button was the only one who went over to check on the woman who was sitting underneath.

“I saw her standing outside like ‘oh my gosh, oh my gosh’ just extremely distraught and she was like that a good while,” said Button of the woman who escaped. “The guy just sat there on his phone and didn’t show any concern for her.”

Button was concerned and dialed 911.

Witnesses say a man driving a utility truck backed up and crashed into the bus stop awning. The impact caused it to come crashing down. Those nearby say the elderly lady sitting beneath barely escaped as she darted from beneath the collapsing metal.

“The whole thing just crashed down. She was sitting there,” said Button. “She was just walking around for a while pacing, just in shock.”

Button hopes to find the woman who she says had a McDonald’s uniform on.

“I saw it and thought whoa, wow, thank God she got out in time.”

No word on if the driver of the utility truck will be ticketed for the crash.
