ATLANTA (CNN) -The Center for Disease Control is telling us to think twice about opening our eyes underwater.

You know the red and burning eyes people sometimes get after a day at the pool? It turns out, these symptoms don’t come from chlorine as many believe.

They actually come from the chemical mixing with urine!

The CDC credits urine, feces and other bodily germs in pools for summer sickness. The handout that the CDC released says that a strong chlorine scent is a warning sign.

A Stronger smell means the more germs in the pool as the chemicals are working harder to keep things clean.

According to the CDC, being more aware of what to look for in pool and hourly breaks can help ward off summer germs.
