Construction underway on marina, commercial development project in Bonita Springs

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla.- A former fish camp will soon be Bonita Spring’s next hot spot. Construction is now underway for a project bringing a marina, beach bar and more to an area on the Estero Bay.

“To have that area that was so lovely for a long time and it had the preservation of early Florida, I think it’s a good idea,” said Ceel Spuhlei who lives on Fort Myers Beach and visits Bonita often.

Preserving Old Florida while bringing Bonita into a new era– that’s the goal of development on the large area of land off of U.S. 41 just north of Coconut Road, known to many as the former Week’s Fish Camp.

Community development showed WINK News blueprints which include a marina with more than 200 boat slips, a beach bar, volleyball courts, fire pits and restaurants. There’s also a large area zone for commercial use where plans are still in the works, likely bringing in even more restaurants, stores and offices.

Deputy Mayor Steve McIntosh tells WINK News this is one major step in the city’s goal of becoming an ecotourism destination.

“We have three rivers running through and part of the revitalization is to assure we have green space, parks, a place for our children’s grandchildren to have natural resources and be able to enjoy the conservation we’re saving now,” said McIntosh.

The entire project is estimated to cost up to $100 million. The first phase which includes the marina and restaurant could be finished as early as the end of this year.
