An Ohio mom’s Facebook video of her 10-month-old daughter Piper has gone viral, and in addition to being adorable, it spreads an important message: it’s never too soon to check your child’s eyesight.

Jessica Sinclair posted the video last month showing what happened when Piper put on her brand new glasses for the first time. Piper bursts into a big smile as she sees the world — and her parents — more clearly than ever before.

CBS Cincinnati affiliate WKRC tells the story behind the video. “We started to notice that she was having issues reaching her milestone of crawling,” Jessica Sinclair said. “So at her regular pediatric check they did an eye screening and saw that she might have had a slight astigmatism.”

The family scheduled an appointment for Piper with Dr. Josiah Young of Opticare Vision Centers, who found that the little girl was extremely farsighted. “Her eyes checked out healthy,” Sinclair said, but “one eye was +7.00 and the other is +9.00. So we got her glasses made.”

Sinclair explained in her Facebook post that the doctor “dilated her eyes and used a scope to determine her refractive error in her prescription. The rx is not going to be 100% because she can’t do numbers or letters. But enough to help her see a lot better.”

When they picked up the glasses a week later, “she tried them on for a quick second in the office to make sure they fitted properly,” Sinclair said. Then later, with cellphone camera rolling, the family recorded what happened when Piper got her first good look at the world. “Her reaction 🙂 melts my heart,” Sinclair wrote in her Facebook post.

Sinclair said she would love to use the video’s success to raise awareness about the importance of eye health and getting infants’ eyes checked.
