Man charged with attempted murder in attack outside Fort Myers Wal-Mart

FORT MYERS, Fla.- A man is under arrest, accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a Wal-Mart Supercenter on Colonial Boulevard in Fort Myers.

Joseph M. Kelley, 32, a transient in the Fort Myers area, has been charged with attempted murder and sexual battery after surveillance video from the store helped identify him as a suspect.

Just before 2 a.m. on Tuesday, Fort Myers police say a woman in her 50s was found on the west side loading dock area of Wal-Mart, physically beaten, with bruises and lacerations to her face and body. She was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital as a trauma alert.

Kelley was later found laying in the bike path to the south of the Caloosa Nature Center off Ortiz Avenue, with dried blood on his hands and clothing.

Kelley is currently being held without bond. The victim is in critical, but stable, condition.
