MARGATE, Fla. (AP) – A South Florida man has been arrested in the fatal beating of his mother’s boyfriend, days after the woman was found dead.

In a news release, Margate police say 30-year-old Edward Cadet of Sunrise was charged Tuesday with murder without premeditation in the death of 59-year-old Randy Pierson. Cadet’s mother, 60-year-old Alfonsene Valentine, was found shot to death Sunday in a Coral Bay field.

Police say Cadet went to retrieve his mother’s belongings from the Margate home she shared with Pierson, when the two got into an argument and Cadet attacked Pierson, severely injuring his head and face. Pierson was taken to a hospital, where he died.

It isn’t clear if Cadet has an attorney.

Valentine’s death remains under investigation.
