BERLIN (AP) – Three aid agencies are appealing to European countries to help prevent sexual abuse of women and girls in refugee camps.

The United Nations refugee agency, the U.N. Population Fund and the Women’s Refugee Commission say a field study shows women are particularly vulnerable to sexual violence and other abuse on their journey to Europe.

In a report published Wednesday, the agencies accused governments, aid groups and the European Union of failing to prevent or properly respond to such attacks.

They cited a lack of gender segregation and of safe washing facilities in refugee reception centers.

The report also noted that some women traveling alone get married in order to receive protection.

More than a million migrants came to Europe last year.
