DURHAM, N.C. (AP) – Vice President Joe Biden told nurses, doctors and researchers at Duke University that he needs their help tapping into the enormous power of scientific and clinical data to find cancer cures.

Biden visited the university Wednesday to promote the White House’s proposed $1 billion effort to accelerate progress on cancer by streamlining cooperation between the government, medical professionals and pharmaceutical companies.

He asked professionals from Duke and other organizations for examples of how they crossed boundaries between specialties or found other ways to innovate.

He believes cooperation is the key to unlocking the potential of recent medical advances, saying: “The science is ready.”

It was Biden’s first trip to a university since the president announced his budget request this month to fund the bulk of the effort dubbed the “cancer moonshot.”
