Road work creates abrupt delays for Fort Myers school

FORT MYERS, Fla. – A major roadwork project caused delays for parents dropping their children off to Gateway Elementary Tuesday morning.

Parents said the construction along Griffin Road near State Road 82 tripled their traveling times.

“It was pretty bad. Usually — we just live around the corner — it’s about eight minutes maybe to get dropped off and out it took about 25,” a parent said Tuesday.

The school sent out a text before school began to warn parents that crews would be resurfacing. Parents were asked to reroute using Gateway Boulevard to avoid the backup.

“Had I had known probably would have left a little sooner,” a parent said.

The Lee County School District said it was not notified about the project so it was unable to let parents know in advance.

Walkers and bike-riders were not affected by the construction. Some children enjoyed passing cars from the sidewalk.

“They rode their bikes in the morning and my daughter was ecstatic because she just kept on saying ‘Bye cars! Bye cars! Bye cars!'” one parent said.

Construction will continue on the road Wednesday.
