Orlando suburb subsidizing Uber rides

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) – A central Florida city is offering to pay anywhere from a fifth to a quarter of the cost of an Uber ride.

The City of Altamonte Springs on Friday said it would pay for 20 percent of an Uber ride that begins and ends within city limits.

City officials also promised to pay 25 percent of a ride that starts or ends at the city’s SunRail station, starting at the end of the month.

City officials say the purpose of the subsidies is to alleviate traffic congestion in the Orlando suburb of 42,000 residents and also to encourage people to use the commuter rail.

About $500,000 is being budgeted for the pilot program, which city officials describe as the first of its kind in the United States.
