WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) – Authorities say an 11-year-old Florida girl drowned after going into a retention pond to retrieve her sister’s backpack. Palm Beach County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Teri Barbera said in a news release that the child’s backpack was thrown into the water on Thursday evening. A bystander pulled the girl from the water and she was taken to a hospital, where she died late Thursday night. Barbera says everyone believed to be with the girl was safe and accounted for. It wasn’t clear who threw the bag into the water. The sheriff’s office didn’t’ release any other details.
