Man accused of stealing CCPD car, smashing into pole behind bars

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – A man accused of being drunk when he stole a police vehicle and crashed is being held on more than $150,000 bond.

David Anthony Fernandes, 24, of Cape Coral appeared in court Thursday morning in a wheelchair.

Authorities say Fernandes caused a road closure on Cape Coral Parkway on Monday after he smashed a police volunteer unit into a light pole and caused a small fire. Witness said he managed to escape from officers while in handcuffs.

He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries but on Wednesday, he was booked into Lee County Jail with a littany of felony charges that include: robbery, aggravated battery, resisting an officer, vehicle theft, property damage and larceny. Fernandes is also facing misdemeanor charges for drunk driving, escaping custody, and driving violations.
