Collier County mother donating kidney to 8-year-old daughter

NAPLES, Fla. — A lifelong struggle with a kidney disorder will soon be over for an 8-year-old Golden Gate Estates girl, thanks to a major assist from her mother.

The girl’s mother, Sofia Luque, will donate a kidney to her daughter Tuesday. The hope is that the procedure will eliminate the need for the two or three weekly dialysis treatments that Casey Luque has been traveling to Tampa to undergo.

“She and I have been through thick and thin,” Sofia Luque said.

Casey was born with only one kidney, and that one was only 30 percent functional. Doctors recently told the family that Casey wouldn’t need a transplant at least until she becomes a teenager, but that quickly changed.

The new kidney won’t cure Casey’s condition, but it’s the best alternative to dialysis, doctors said.
