Georgia tourist drowns in rough surf off Florida beach

OKALOOSA ISLAND, Fla. (AP) – A Georgia man drowned after getting caught in a riptide while vacationing in the Florida Panhandle.

Okaloosa County Sheriff’s officials said in a news release that 36-year-old Ulysses Williams of Columbus, Georgia, was pulled to shore shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday. He was declared dead a short time later at the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.

According to the news release, a friend told deputies Williams panicked after getting caught in the rough surf near the Okaloosa Island pier.

No further details were immediately available.
