FORT MYERS, Fla.- A former Cape Coral Police Department officer convicted of sexual assault was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Monday.

Casey Ortiz was found guilty in April of having sex with an underage girl while on duty.

In court Monday, the victim’s father mentioned how his daughter is now afraid to go in public, saying she doesn’t trust anyone and is nervous not only when she sees a police officer, but has also developed a distrust for those closest to her.

“She doesn’t trust anyone. She doesn’t even trust her own family. She’s very nervous every time she sees a police officer,” the father said.

Ortiz was facing a maximum of 30 years behind bars. He said 15 years feels like death.

“Right now, all I can tell you is 15 years. Fifteen years for a police officer, that’s a death sentence,” he said.

He was also sentenced to five years of sex offender probation.
