Tropical Storm Kay forms in Pacific off Mexico’s coast

MIAMI (AP) – Tropical Storm Kay has formed in the Pacific off the coast of Mexico and is passing near Socorro Island.

The storm’s maximum sustained winds Friday are near 40 mph (65 kph) with no significant change in strength expected during the next day or so.

Kay is centered about 280 (455 kilometers) south-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula and is moving northwest near 8 mph (13 kph).

Meanwhile in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Fiona is moving faster. Fiona’s maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph (75 kph) with weakening expected to begin this weekend.

Fiona is centered about 1,295 (2,080 kilometers) west of the Cabo Verde Islands and is moving west-northwest near 10 mph (17 kph).
