Lee County deputy puts up basketball hoop for kids

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputy Micah Cox is no stranger to a basketball hoop in a neighborhood off Ortiz Avenue, so when the hoop broke, he sprung into action.

Cox bought a new hoop and set it up in place of the old one Tuesday, allowing nearby children to continue with games in which Cox is a frequent participant.

“As soon as he brought the basketball goal, it was just like excitement for every kid out here,” Ortiz Avenue resident Jamie Chapman said.

The act of kindness had a humanizing effect, allowing residents to see a different side of law enforcement officers than they’re accustomed to, Chapman said.

“They have a life just like we do,” Chapman said. “They’ve got feelings just like we do.”
