IRS imposters could cost you if you don’t hang up

Published: Updated:

Beware of IRS imposter scams this tax season. Scammers are calling and claiming to be from the IRS, saying and if you don’t pay up, they threaten arrest.

What you need to know, the IRS will never call you to demand immediate payment. The IRS will always contact you by mail.

You always have the right to question the amount owed and have options on how you can pay.

Security expert Carrie Kerski said, “They’re very convincing and they’re very threatening and very aggressive, so they basically psychologically wear you down and you end up falling for it.”

This scam has become so effective it’s used all year round, not just during tax season.

Our security expert says she gets reports of this call on a monthly basis.

Whenever in doubt hang up and call the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040
