Palm Beach County did not meet all of its deadlines for the midterm elections. Officials said they could still be counting votes until Christmas. However, the county managed to confirm the winner of a state house district with one second to spare.

Susan Bucher, Palm Beach County supervisor of elections, said her department uploaded results at 11:59:59 a.m. for the winner of House District 89 Sunday.

WINK News was told Palm Beach County finished its machine count around 5 a.m. Election crews returned to the office at 10 a.m. to begin the hand count when they finished about an hour later.

Republican Mike Caruso won District 89, beating Democrat Jim Bonfiglio by 37 votes.

Bucher said the office still has not manually recounted over 600,000 votes for agriculture commissioner. The votes from last Saturday are the total submitted to the state.

Although the state certifies results on Tuesday, the law still requires counties to finish counting the votes for the commissioner race between Republican Matt Caldwell and Democrat Nikki Fried — unless the losing candidate concedes. Caldwell is currently behind in the race and has not conceded.

Palm beach elections finished its recount for US Senate on Friday.

“Iam really surprised that this situation is, unbelievable, happening in the United States,” Angel Escobar said. “I can’t believe it.”
