Big Backpack giveaway event in SWFL

With just 15 days left to go until students begin returning to school, WINK News is helping you get everything to make sure your child is prepared on the first day.

A backpack giveaway event the Multicultural Center of Southwest Florida has been doing for 20 years gives away backpacks full of supplies, and this year the event has grown so much that it had to be moved to the Skatium.

On Sunday organizers will supply 2,000 kids ages 5-12 with all the supplies needed for the school year thanks to the support of local businesses and organizations including WINK News.

These organizations that donate lend a helping hand to students and families that may not be able to afford them otherwise.

Founder Leonardo Garcia says your child’s backpack will include everything needed for them to get off to the right start.

“We get the school supply list from the school district and so everything on the school supply list is what the school district gives to the children so their parents can buy them,” Garcia said.

If you plan on attending the event, organizers recommend getting there early to get your supplies. The event is from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
