Southwest Florida has been completely outside Hurricane Dorian’s forecast cone for roughly two days Sunday night, but we are still talking to neighbors, asking them about the preparations they are making in case things in the track change as it slowly moves toward the east coast.

Many people in Lee County are split on whether to take it easy during Labor Day weekend or continue to hunker down and maintain preparations for potential impacts by Dorian.

“I’m scared to death,” Linda Steinbach said in Cape Coral. “My common sense is telling me that Florida can get wiped out.”

Steinbach has a stocked pantry, batteries and an overflowing tool shed.

On Fort Myers Beach, some are prepared in a more relaxed sense.

“This is our hurricane preparedness, and there’s less travelers and less traffic. So it’s like okay let’s go have fun,” Jeff Leavor said. “No one’s in town, so let’s go to the beach.”

So the answer for how to spend the holiday weekend with the question of Hurricane Dorian lingering off the coast of the state all depends on who you ask.

Steinbach is busy preparing a week’s worth of frozen meatballs.

“They always put in there, but we don’t know,” Steinbach said. “But there’s always that, and that’s what I’m afraid of.”

Leavor continues to take the updates on Dorian day-by-day, enjoying his long weekend.

“Probably grill out tomorrow, got some dogs and some corn and spend time with the family,” Leavor said.

But people like Steinbach are cautiously waiting for projections to come true before taking it easy. It’s always best to be prepared.

“One little wobble can change the whole makeup of everything,” Steinbach said.
